What you'll learn
Ancient Origins of Timekeeping
You’ll discover how some of the earliest human civilizations—like those in Africa (Ishango Bone, Lebombo Bone, Nabta Playa) and Kemet—used astronomy, lunar cycles, and star alignments to measure time, track seasons, and structure rituals.
Kemetic Time Systems
This eBook explains how ancient Kemetians developed advanced calendars—like the lunar, solar, and star (Sothic/Sirius) calendars—and how these were linked to agriculture, festivals, and spiritual practice. You’ll also learn how priest-astronomers functioned as “timekeepers” of society.
The Role of Timekeepers in Culture & Spirituality
You’ll gain insight into how the timekeeping systems shaped community life, guided ceremonies, and reflected cosmic principles of balance (Ma’at). The book reveals that timekeeping wasn’t just practical—it was sacred, tied to the rhythms of creation and divine order.

Did You Know...
Our Ancestors relied heavily on astronomy for timekeeping developing sophisticated systems based on the sun, stars, and constellations. They used these observations to create a Lunar calendar, to track spiritual festivals, and understand the cycles of nature. Our Ancestors timekeeping methods also influenced the development of the concept of hours, with the night being divided in 12 hours based on the rising and setting of certain stars.
1. The 360-Day Calendar:
Our Ancestors along the Nile developed a calendar with 12 months 30 days each, plus five extra special days resulting in a 365-days year. This calendar was aligned with the rising of Sirius (Sopdet). The slight discrepancy between the 360-Day calendar and the solar year was 5 1/4 day addressed through adding 5 special days to the end of the year. Which leaves 6 hour (A quater of a Day). By not adding 6 hour onto the year meant that these 2 cycles would realign themselve once every 1,460 years.
The Calendar Project
What began in 1987 as The Calendar Project has evolved into a living legacy—decades of research, refinement, and cultural restoration culminating in our latest version of the Kemet Calendar. Rooted in ancient wisdom yet designed for modern application, this calendar reconnects us to the natural cycles of the Nile Valley and the sacred science of timekeeping practiced by our ancestors. Every update has been a step toward greater accuracy, deeper alignment with Ma’at, and a richer integration of astronomy, mythology, and daily living. What started as vision has now become a practical tool for students, seekers, and teachers of Kemetic Science worldwide. Step into alignment with the rhythms of the cosmos. Download the Kemet Calendar today and experience time the way our ancestors designed it—sacred, balanced, and alive.
2. Star Clocks and Zodiac
Our ancestors along the niles used the Sebau, (a groups of stars) that rose roughly every 10 days, to divide the night into hours. By observing which Sebau ( a group of stars) were visable at different times during the night, they could track the progression of hours. These 10 day star clocks were often depicted on coffin lids and tomb ceilings, demonstrating their importance in timekeeping
3. Water and Shadow clocks:
While astronomy was central, our ancestors also used water clocks and sundials for time keeping especially during the day. Shadows cast by the sun were used to mark the hours on sundails, with the gnomon (the part that cast the shadow) and the dail being carfully calibrated. Water clocks , were used to measure time by tracking the flow of water.

4. The Concept of Hours:
Our ancestors are credited with developing the concept of the hour, dividing both the day and the night into 12 hours each. This division, particulary of the night, was based on our ancestors observation of constellations and their cyclical appearance and dis appearance. The word “wnut,” which translate to “hour,” is found in ancient Kemetic texts and is associated with a star symbol.
5. Spiritual and Agricultural Significance:
Astronomy was deeply interwined with spirituality and daily life in ancient Kemet. Temple were often aligned with specific celestial events, such as the solstices and the rising of Sopdet (Sirius), reflecting the importance of these events. The predictable cycles of the stars were crucial for agricultural planning and scheduling spiritual festivals
Does The Moon Affect Humans?
The Moon in Kemetic Thought In the Kemetic system, the Moon is linked with Aah (Iah), the Neter (divine principle) of lunar cycles, rhythm, and reflection. The ancients observed how the Moon governed the Nile’s waters, tides, fertility, and agricultural cycles, and recognized that humans, being over 70% water, are also influenced by these same rhythms.
Explore Kemetic Sacred Science in Depth
Kemetic Sacred Science begins with Ma’at — the principle of balance, truth, and divine order. Students learn how every aspect of time, space, and human life is governed by this cosmic law. Rather than abstract philosophy, Ma’at is lived: in justice, in mathematics, in architecture, in ritual. You’ll see how sacred science linked the movement of stars with ethical living. You’ll study how temples, pyramids, and calendars were aligned to cosmic harmony.
